I’m currently on a break from writing in-depth media reviews while on the verge of one of the most important events of the entire year for college aged students, halloweekend. There’s been a lot of confusion on when we’d celebrate Halloween properly this year because obviously it’s just so not cool anymore to party or do anything fun on the actual day. Some think it was last weekend, some think it was this weekend, I think it’s just whenever I get invited to anything. I don’t go out to bars considering I’m only 20 but I can only imagine showing up to one 2 weeks before Halloween and seeing practically everyone dressed up. I too would order another Uber to drive me home in order to whip up a quick fit that everyone will probably think is normal anyway. Anything to feel more festive and fit in with what everybody else is doing, right?
Ok I’m not saying that Halloween is dead or that people are partying too much or being too basic or anything like that. I’m saying simply that dressing up and having a chill night with friends is a dying art. I thought I wouldn’t have any reason to dress up this year and very quickly was proven wrong. So now I’m one of those people trying to figure out what’s going to be obvious enough to wear where people will immediately get it, can consist of items I already own, and will still be niche enough so I’m not boring or overrated. I’m also tired of seeing cat and nurse costumes when there are so many amazing movies, tv shows, and iconic moments in pop culture to take inspiration from this year. Personally, if I were to have any extra time to put something together I would’ve gone as the Marias submarine cover art because I love their music and it’s giving underwater, intergalactic fantasy.
Think about when you were younger, I’m talking young enough to where trick-or-treating didn’t feel illegal, and you would put on the costume your parents would help you pick out to walk the cold streets at night collecting candy from strangers or neighbors. Do you remember sitting down and sorting through all of the candy by color or ones you did and didn’t like? That to me is what Halloween is for. I hate being expected to have plans consisting of drinking and hanging out in a room filled with people I don’t even know. It’s not like the alternative wouldn’t be sad. If I wanted to sort through candy on my living room floor now, I’d have to buy it in bulk from Costco or something. That being said, I’m more of a laid back sort of person and so is my boyfriend so my plan was to maybe watch a scary movie or two with some popcorn and have cute little treats throughout the night.
October just doesn't feel like it used to either. Where did the chilly days and nights, the falling leaves, and the barren trees go? I remember a couple of years where there were rumors of snow leading up to the holiday. Now even when I was living on the East Coast where the seasons were apparent, they were becoming more and more blurred. Summer got a little longer and fall was a little hotter. It changed so fast but so slow to where we didn’t notice until it was in full effect. Now I’m sweating when I step outside and it’s almost November. I can wear a mini skirt and tank top without a second thought. No insulated tights in sight.
Regardless of what your plans are for Halloween, know that I’ll be at home and spending the day with the person I love just as you should too. If you have anyone younger around you, remind them of just how special these moments are. Indulge in some sweet treats and go carve a pumpkin or something.
My favorite Halloween tradition is carving jack o'lanterns with my husband. It usually takes at least an hour and we usually put the soundtrack to Nightmare Before Christmas on. We coordinate them: last year mine was Frank and his was the time from 'Donnie Darko' and this year is Elle Driver (definitely the hardest design I've ever carved) and he did a snake for Bud. Afterwards, I roast the pumpkin seeds and he purees the 'guts' for recipes like pumpkin ravioli and various breads. Going out to bars on Halloween can be fun but it doesn't mean anything. And also... yeah... global warming is definitely real. It's 81 degrees here today. Thanks for writing this; it made me think.
